A landlord has been fined nearly £6,500 for failing to deal with numerous issues at a rental property she owned. Housing officials issued an improvement notice in 2016, but the landlord failed to carry out the required improvements. Officials then declared the property as unfit for tenants and took her to court.
Nightmare Property
The property, which was described as a “nightmare” by housing officers, had no fire alarms, lots of electrical faults, and windows that were insecure. There was also significant fire damage
to the rear of the building, the front door was nailed shut, which represented a serious fire risk, floorboards were missing, carpet on stairs was loose, and the heating system was inadequate. The improvement notice required the landlord to make essential improvements by October 2016, but it took housing officers more than a year to gain entry to inspect the property.
Property Subject to Closure Notice
The police subsequently issued an antisocial behaviour order on the property and it was later shut down. The house is now subject to a prohibition order, so it can’t be rented out until the required works have been carried out.
“We welcome the court’s decision and a significant fine is justified after Jubb had taken advantage of a tenant and forced them to live in uninhabitable and unsafe conditions,” said a councillor for Bassetlaw District Council.
“We hope that this serves as a warning to other landlords whose properties are not up to the required standard or pose a danger to their tenants.”
