Aldgate is in the City of London but close to the border with the East End. Indeed, it’s name is taken from a gate in the ancient wall which used to surround London. Like the name ‘London’ itself, the origin of Aldgate’s name has been somewhat lost in the mists of time. Apparently it’s not simply ‘Old Gate’, but may have been the much more promising ‘Ale Gate’.
This area is known in the property development world as ‘City Fringe’. It is a sliver of the eastern city of London which has recently seen significant residential development in an otherwise intensely office-centric district. That means that residents have the best of both worlds. Sensible city life on the one hand, and edgy east end life on the other, as their mood dictates.
